Welcome To Kindergarten

Today was the first day of Kindergarten for my 5-years-old. People constantly ask me if I was sad or worried and my answer was nope! Sophia Rose has been in school since she was 2- years – old, this summer was the longest she hasn’t gone to school. When she was one and a half years old is when we realized that she wasn’t quite like other kids her age. I had a couple of friends who had kids the same age as Sophia Rose and I know they say never compare your child to other children but I couldn’t help it and I’m glad I did. She wasn’t talking at all when she should have been and people would constantly tell us “oh any day now” or “I was 5 -years- old when I started talking” for me waiting that long was unacceptable so we went to the pediatrician to see if maybe she had hearing problems or if she could shed light on why Sophia Rose wasn’t talking and she said the words no parent wants to hear “I think your daughter has Autism”. Absolutely terrifying.  She said we could go through our local regional center for an Autism diagnosis or through Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, she also said CHOLA would be faster and she was right.

We got an appointment in a week with the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Can you believe Regional Center of Van Nuys was almost 2 months? We definitely wanted to start therapy immediately and felt 2 months was to long. When we got to CHOLA, we were introduced to six different people, a pediatrician and his assistant, phycologist and her assistant speech therapist and occupational therapist. We all sat in a tiny room and they interacted with her. When that hour was done we had to make another appointment to see each doctor individually which took about a month. After about a month and a half we got the diagnosis that Sophia Rose had Autism. The diagnosis they wrote on paper was huge! It looked like a novel, till this day I have never read it. The best part of going to CHOLA was they recommend a place called McRory Pediatrics for our services and it was a group based therapy not a typical therapy that most people think of like a speech therapist coming to your home. They recommended her learning with other children which we felt was the best thing for her. Children with Autism have a hard time socializing so we thought killing 3 birds with one stone by getting speech, occupational therapy and learning to interact with other kids her age. McRory was the greatest thing that has happened to my daughter. Within three months she was talking and making incredible strides and had “graduated” to a more advance class for children who were higher functioning. Don’t get me wrong it was hard and for the first month or so I was there everyday learning so when I was at home I could implement what they did in therapy at home. There was a lot of crying, kicking and biting but luckily, she was so young and she won’t remember what we went through to get to where we are today. So, I can’t express enough how important an early diagnosis and early intervention is! Now she is 5-years-old and most people don’t realize or believe me when I say she has Autism. Sophia Rose still gets speech at OT therapy but a classroom based environment, they don’t take her out of the classroom. So long story short, no I wasn’t nervous I was excited on the first day of kindergarten! The only thing I was nervous about was her taking the bus to school which she loves by the way! When she got home from the first day of school she was talking so much! Telling me about the new friend she made and how she played on the playground and that she was shy. It was incredible! I’m a happy and proud mama!

First Day of Kindergarten 8/24/17

Churro Explosion!

Have you heard about the new and exciting churros flavors at Disneyland? Well this past week my husband and I tried some, for better or for worse. I’ll be rating them from best to worst and I mean worst.

Best

S’mores Churro

I’m a sucker for s’mores! The delicious marshmallowly chocolatie goodness! This churro is coated in gram crackers and you dip the churro in melted marshmallow and melted chocolate. Is your mouth watering? Mine is!

Good

Galactic Churro

It tasted like a regular churro so it was yummy! It did look way to pretty to eat though I mean come on look at those pretty edible stars!

Bad

Sour Watermelon Churro

Was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever tasted in my life but if you are adventurous please try it for yourself. It’s supposedly a limited time only flavor, it’s to celebrate the return of Fantasmic. So taste it before it’s gone!

Fruit Tart

One of the many things my husband and I like to do together is bake. The other day we made a fruit tart and I thought I’d share our success with you!

b_finishedtart

Things You’ll Need For The Dough:

  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla
  • Sugar
  • Flour
  • Salt

b_ingredients

Ingredients

Yields enough dough for two desserts.

  • 2 1/4 cups or 270g all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 cup or 60g sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 14 tablespoons (1 3/4 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 large egg yolk, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Mix flour, sugar, and salt until combined then add butterb_mix
  2. Whisk together egg, egg yolk and vanilla. Then add eggs; knead until dough begins to come together. Turn dough out onto a floured work surface; lightly knead to form a ball. b_ball
  3. Divide dough into 2 pieces, and gently press into flat disks. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight. b_wrap

Next on to the Custard!

We used vanilla pudding and we made whipped cream. Below I’ll show you how we made the whipped cream, super easy and yummy.

b_jello

Things You’ll Need for the Whipped Cream:

  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Sugar

b_custardingrediants

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoon of sugar

Directions

  1. Place cream and sugar in a mixing bowl that has been chilled and mix for 1-2 minutes. Mix until soft peaks have formed. Tip: Don’t whip too much or you will end up will cottage cheese looking whipped cream…ew.

Super easy, right? Keep in mind most recipes say to add vanilla to the mix but we didn’t because the vanilla pudding was sweet, we didn’t want it too sweet.

Now to make the custard simply fold the pudding and whipped cream together

b_custard

Back to the fruit tart!

Preheat oven to 350

Once dough has chilled, roll the dough flat.

b_flat

Then place it into the tin and with a fork poke holes on bottom of dough. Place into the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown

b_intin

Look how beautifully golden brown!! YUM! Tip: There was so much extra dough we made cookies!!

b_cooked

Once the dough has cooled put that delicious custard on top of the dough

b_finishcustard

Now this is where your creativity comes into play. I’m a very particular eater so I just wanted Strawberries and blackberries on my tart but the world is your oyster!

Finished product:

b_finishedtart

FYI I don’t like the glaze that is normally on top of the tart but if you want to add it I found this recipe via Martha Stewart:

Ingredients:

1/4 cup red currant jelly, seedless raspberry jam, quince jelly, or apricot jam

Place jelly or jam in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring, until melted and smooth. Set glaze aside to cool slightly. Then brush on fruit. Easy peasy.

You’ll notice you’ll have left over dough, custard and strawberries so there are a couple of things we ended up doing with our left overs. We made cookies and parfaits.

Daphne & Scarlett’s Birth Story

On June 10th, 2017 Sophia Rose woke up at 4:00 am because she is sick (the day before we took her to the doctor and she has an ear infection). After she finally went back to bed I found myself struggling to go back to sleep, which often happens when something wakes me up at an ungodly hour. So, I start reading on my phone and in my head, I’m going back and forth if I should get up and pee, at this point I’m so pregnant that getting out of bed was like running a marathon, not easy. I don’t know about you but when I pee in the morning that is it, I’m up so I felt I was delaying the inevitable. So, I got up, waddled to the potty but the strangest thing, I heard a pop. Nothing alarming but during my pregnancy with Sophia Rose I had something called a mucus plug fall out so I thought the pop might have been that. If you don’t know what a mucus plug is, its gross and is exactly what it sounds like. Anyways, when your mucus plug falls out it doesn’t mean you’re in labor it just means your body is ready. So, thinking it was my mucus plug I go over in my head the list of things I still need to get done before the twins get here in a week. I need to get the car washed, I need to install the car seats, I need to wash their clothes, get the crib sheets on and then I got excited because I was going to eat a bagel for breakfast! Once I was done I got up and heard a gush! It seriously sounded like someone dumped a gallon of water in the toilet and I just knew, my water had just broke. During my last pregnancy the labor class said that if your water breaks it’s not like the movies, there is no need to rush unless it’s a yellow or a green color. With Sophia Rose my water broke as well but with her my water tuned yellowish-green color. So, I got my towel shoved it between my thighs and headed back into my bed room. Fun fact: not sure if you knew this but when your water breaks it breaks until you deliver your baby aka your body has a crazy amount of water stored in there. When I get back to the bedroom I can’t help but laugh because Sophia Rose was a week early and so are these twins also Sophia Rose is super sick, I have so much I wanted to get done today and I’m hungry!! Once your water breaks you can’t eat, I remember that from last time. I gently wake up my husband and I told him my water broke and he said “okay, give me 5 more minutes” …. I want five more minutes! If I can’t have it neither can you!! Since my vagina is still gushing water I had no idea where I should sit, can’t sit on my bed because I don’t want to get that wet. Can’t sit on the chair in my room as it’s all fabric and I don’t want to get that wet so I sit on my floor. I called my doctor and she asked me if I knew the last known position of Baby A (baby A is the baby lowest aka closest to the exit) I let her know the entire pregnancy Baby A has been face down but at yesterday’s appointment she was transverse (sideways) so she told me that I need to go to the hospital asap because something could be wrong if she isn’t in position but I’m in labor. So, I tell my husband your five minutes are up and I start to call the family. The only family member that is close is my brother-in-law, my mother in law was going to take my daughter and they live at least an hour away so we called my brother in law to come pick up Sophia Rose. I felt at this point I was in a rush so I told my brother- in- law to meet us at the hospital (he lived closer to the hospital than he did to us) We woke Sophia Rose up and told her that her sisters are coming and that we needed to go. She got up like a trooper and we headed out the door. The original plan for the day was that my husband and I were going to go the hospital and figure out where I need to go when I go into labor but since the twins came early we had to wing it! We finally get to the hospital an hour after talking to the doctor and we get lost (duh) while we were trying to find where to go a car cut us off and I yell out the window “ASSHOLE” and of course my daughter repeated it like 3 times but I couldn’t worry about it since I still had water gushing! I’m so uncomfortable that I just have my husband drop me off in front and to meet me upstairs.

I get checked in a changed into my gown and I’m having contractions consistently but I’m not really feeling them thank goodness! My husband gets to the room and everyone is very transparent about what’s about to happen. At this point it’s 8:00 am and they tell me at 8:30 am I should be going into surgery. The best news is that the twins were not in destress and delivery should go smoothly.

The anesthesiologist comes in and was the most kind, nicest and calmest person I ever met in my entire life. The entire delivery he would tell me all the sensation that I was about to feel. Once we got into the operating room he would constantly talk to me. He would say things like “okay now you’ll feel like you can’t breathe but don’t worry this is what the oxygen is for” etc. Even when my husband walked away to cut the umbilical cord he would come next to me and tell me how great I was doing and he reassured me that anything I feel to tell him and he would say something like “yes, that’s exactly how you should be feeling” or “that’s completely normal” I need this guy in my everyday life to validate my feelings. Once the babies got washed they brought them over to me to kiss and snuggle with and then they sewed me back together again and I went straight to recovery. The only down side about the first hours of recovery was I was so itchy and shaky from the drugs I was on. It was very distracting. Pretty immediately they brought the twins to me in recovery and we tried to breastfeed them and they immediately latched, it was love at first site. I’m proud of myself, I’m proud of my husband and I’m proud of these girls. I couldn’t have asked for a better delivery. All the nurses were so kind and empathetic. I definitely had a great experience at this hospital and I think the twins did too

Welcome to the World Little Ones!

I’m so happy to announce my twins have entered the world on June 10th 2017! Both healthy and strong! Let me introduce you to Daphne Danger Schwarz &  Scarlett Sage Schwarz.

Daphne: 6 lb 8 oz at 9:43 am & Scarlett 5 lbs 12 oz at 9:42 am, both 19 inches long.

The most surprising part about them is how similar they are to how they were in the womb. Daphne (Baby B) is stubborn, tough and a little piggy when she eats. Scarlett (Baby A) dainty, soft and particular. they were a week early from the scheduled c-section date and a whole month early from their due date, I can’t get over how they were just in my belly! Both of them! When they cry they kick their little legs and I think “wow they kicked me like that!”. My next blog post will be their birth story, so until then enjoy cooing over these cute little bundles!!

Happily Ever After Pt 1- Planning

One year ago, I said I do to the man of my dreams at the Happiest Place on Earth! It was truly a dream come true and something I’ve thought about since I was a little girl. We started to plan our wedding two and a half years prior to the date and about one year into the planning process our daughter was diagnosed with Autism. At that moment, our world stopped turning. When you hear that you think the worst possible things so we devoted all out time and money into getting her therapy and put the wedding on hold. Disney was beyond accommodating and understanding. They let me know that when we are ready they will be there.

Once we were ready about 6 months prior is when all the fun started to happen. We had a planning session that lasted about two hours. We went over everything from colors, the feel and so much more. Disney makes things very easy and prior to the planning session they gave me a booklet to fill out that had a ton of options like menu choice, extras like if we wanted characters or an open bar, so many choices!! I was told to bring:

  • Swatches that represent your desired wedding colors (this is really helpful for the floral and décor team as well as the bakery if you chose to use those colors on your cake)
  • Pictures (wedding attire, bouquets, boutonnieres, ceremony décor, reception décor, favors, cake design, etc.)
  • Questions (make a list as ideas and questions pop in your head!)
  • Excitement!!

Those couple of hours went by so fast. We saw a ton of pictures of example wedding cakes, for me the design of the cake was so hard. I had a lot of wedding cakes pinned to my Pinterest board (which you can still see) Eventually we found a cake design that we tweaked to make our own. Next on the agenda was floral. Disney allows you to use an outside florist but for certain things you must use Disney. Example, we chose to get married at the Rose Court Garden which has a beautiful outdoor gazebo and Disney floral are the only ones that can add décor to the gazebo also there is a clean- up fee at the Rose Court Garden for things like flower pedals or confetti. I really wanted to have rose pedals tossed as we walked down the aisle so we decided to go through Disney to decorate the gazebo and create toss rose pedals. Those were the only two things that we used Disney Floral for.

Next, we chose the menu, in the planning pages Disney gave us a lot of options and we asked the typical questions like gluten free options and vegetarian options. We dreamed big and as we originally wanted steak and lobster but to cut costs and add other important things like an open bar and reception décor we went with chicken (the chicken was the best) We did have one hick up at the time, the bakery did not have my cake flavors so they only had two slices for us to try, normally they give you 4. I was obviously super disappointed because the planning session was during the week and my husband and I had to take the day off from work so it wasn’t easy make it but as Disney does they used their pixie dust and made us 4 full size cakes for us to try. So in a week or so we came back to pick up the cakes (shown in pictures). I had a great time at the planning session it really sets the tone for the rest of the planning. My planner was amazing, she always returned my emails promptly and made time for our phone calls. On the day of the wedding when I saw our planner I cried, seeing her made it seem real, like that was it.

The photo’s I attached were from our planning sessions and food tasting.

Dirty Porcelain Sink?

When I moved in to my current place the porcelain sink in the kitchen wasn’t in the best shape it had scratches and was stained but this past weekend I had company over and cooked a lot and after washing my dishes I noticed the porcelain even more scratched and stained and since I’m nesting and obsessed with cleaning I decided to go to the internet for solutions! So I tried a couple of cleaning solutions using things I had around the house and found what really works! I experimented so you don’t have to! (You’re welcome)

Before

Need:

  • Bleach
  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Paper towels
  • Sponge

Prooducts

Step 1:

Coat your non abrasive side of the sponge in baking soda and scrub your sink.

Tip: use circular motions

Step 2:

Pour hydrogen peroxide on the sponge again using the non ebrasive side and scrub your sink.

Step 3:

Leave baking soda and hydrogen peroxide on your sink for 15 minutes.

Step 4:

With soap, water and sponge rinse your sink. I didn’t use a new sponge, I just rinsed off the sponge I was using with soap and water. Once your sink is rinsed you will notice a difference!! I on the other hand wanted a little more shine. So on to the next step! The shine!

Optional step 5:

Soak paper towels in bleach and lay them all over your sink for 30 minutes and vuala it’s almost as good as new!!!

After
